Hiiiii I started my new meds last night. Things feel pretty awful. I haven’t been able to do anything this past week. My brain just feels slow and everything is just kinda numb. I keep having depressive episodes and I just don’t know how to cope with it right now. I’m also really behind in school because of how much I’ve missed but most of my teachers have been really understanding. Honestly at this point I feel like I’m equally depressed as I am anxious which isn’t fun. Yes, it's usually quite normal. Voices in our heads are heard by many of us, me included. It does not mean that there's anything wrong with you. It's incredible how many people live their lives with a full commentary going on inside their heads. Conversations, arguments, explanations, disagreements and comments on everything that happens are very common. The real problem is that these voices are generated by the brain and the default position for the brain is to emphasise the negative. It's the norm for the brain to minimise anything good and magnify anything to worry about. Just realising this can be hugely helpful. Question the voice. Look for evidence for the negative worries, there usually isn't any. We worry about things that will never happen. As the post suggests, I came up with this simple rhyme at 4 a.m. when I should have been sleeping. This jumped out at me this morning. I am known to spiral when something goes not as planned or things that are not in my control are happening. I work myself up and can only focus on the negative that is happening or even worse could happen. Forgetting to look at the positive parts and focusing only on the negative. No matter how bad something is there is always something good as well. Look for the good and it will get better.

Day 8 of my #advent #dailydeclarations that #iamsomanythings ...an overcomer Today, @i.am.somanythings encourages a reflecton on victories, big or small, from the last year. This year for me has been about my personal battle with #mentalhealthissues : #anxietyattacks that have hit out of nowhere; medication changes that meant struggling with withdrawal and side effects; the daily feelings of loneliness and despair. Earlier in the year I was asked to share with my church a little about my daily life through the week. As I walked into church that morning I didn't know what I was going to say. The time came, and I stood at the front of church, shaking. I talked about my girls, and about work. Then I was asked how people could pray for me. That was when I shared a little about my mental health. I hadn't planned it; God put those words in my mouth. I spoke about the long-time battle, and about knowing that God had kept me safe in his hands throughout. I asked for prayers of protection, for the good days to increase in number. I returned to my seat in tears, still shaking. I'd never shared so publicly before, too fearful of others reactions. So my victories have been numerous: anxiety attacks calmed; medication stabilised; fears fought against; coping strategies built... The battle is not finished, I have days when I just want to hide away and cry, when my stomach churns and my heart races with anxiety. But I have overcome so much. The other thing that caught my eye about @hijadetumadre was how she incorporates #mentalhealth messages in her work. This integration of #culture, #gender expression and mental health is brilliant because it helps to normalize and destigmatize mental health in general and in the #latinx community. Ansiosa and preciosa plays on the loving use of nicknames in Latinx culture and affirms mental health challenges as normal and beautiful. Hey, I wanted to send you a loving reminder that when you decide to embark on a journey within yourself that leads you closer to your goals that are aligned with you heart and soul, it can feel SUPER SCARY.⁣ ⁣ Smile, breathe, + know that this is totally normal.⁣ ⁣ Fear of judgement, criticism from loved ones, failure, rejection, humiliation, etc..the list is endless!⁣ ⁣ Today I want to share with you 5 POWERFUL HACKS that I want to prepare you with before your mom freaks out that you’re quitting law school to go travel the world.⁣🥳 ⁣ 1.) YOUR WORDS MATTER.- Pay attention to the words you’re feeding your mind. The world (and possibly everyone around you) is putting in their 2 cents and you MUST start to be in control of what you consume, mentally. Watch your own language when you speak about your dream. Feed your mind only supportive thoughts (even if you don’t 100% believe yourself just yet!)⁣ ⁣ 2.) DO. NOT. WAIT. - For the right time, to save more money, once you lose those 20 lbs, etc…extending that waiting period only allows more time for fear-minded thinking to TAKE OVER. Nope, you’re not going to give it ANY MORE time than it’s already taken. The universe rewards the action takers. Outta my way!⁣ ⁣ 3.) TELL YOUR INNER CONTROL FREAK TO GTFO.- We seek to control when we don’t understand. And most get stuck in the “how” part. They’ve gotten clear on their “why”, but “how is this going to work!? I NEED to see the plan laid out before I commit!” This is where trust in yourself, belief, and confidence will blossom. But only if you can chill out on that death grip you have on your vision. Having steps 1-3 is the perfect starting point.⁣ ⁣ 4.) ACT AS IF- You’re becoming someone new. You’re becoming who you’ve always been. Peeling back the layers and years of limiting conditioning takes time. Start acting as her, NOW. She’s brave, courageous, confident, + driven to create her own reality.⁣ ⁣ 5.) BREATHE- Holy crap, BREATHE, GIRL!In times of panic + anxiety b/c shit is hitting the fan, please breathe. Your body + mind will thank you. In for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. Repeat. ⁣ ⁣ Proud of you for taking this leap, here if you need me. 💕💕💕

TIS THE SEASON of shopping for the perfect gift, staying up late wrapping presents, and getting together with family and friends to enjoy holiday feasts. 🎁 TIS ALSO THE SEASON for added stress on our bodies and minds. For those of us with an intolerance to stress it’s important to find ways to maintain a balance. 🎄 I minimize the hustle and bustle of shopping and crowds with online buying and gift cards. Mindfully indulging in goodies helps me avoid fluctuations in emotions and digestive issues. Recognizing when stress reducing quiet time is necessary is the most important. PANIC SURFING Panic attacks are sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness, or a feeling that something really bad is going to happen. 1 in 100 Australians have suffered from panic attacks in the last 12 months - it is a common problem. Panic attacks trigger a surge of adrenaline hormone in our bodies. Not only is it released during a panic attack, but it is also released when we're stressed, when we're involved in doing something physical, when we're excited or angry. It's important to know and to remember that panic attacks are not dangerous, they just feel that way and so can be extremely frightening. A few coping tips: Try not to fight what you are feeling Relax using breathing techniques Use distraction to surf through the feelings Challenge your fear Give yourself time to cope Be patient with yourself Face avoidance urges Don't self medicate with drugs or alcohol Seek help - "surfing" panic involves making a plan to manage the unpleasant cycle of catastrophic thoughts, flight/fight response and distressing physical feelings. Psychologists use cognitive behavioural therapy, relaxation techniques and exposure therapy to address this cycle.
