Following the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 between East and West Pakistan, the Bihari were left behind in newly formed Bangladesh. An Urdu speaking minority group, they were viewed by many as being Pakistani collaborators during the war, despite some Biharis fighting alongside Bangladeshi forces for independence. In 1974 an agreement was signed between Pakistan and Bangladesh with the promise that within three years the Biharis would repatriate to Pakistan; however, nearly 50 years later the wait continues. . By estimates there are currently up to 300,000 Bihari throughout various “temporary” camps in Bangladesh established in 1971. Today many Bihari identify themselves as Bangladeshi, with several generations having been born in Bangladesh; despite this they are victims of systematic persecution. Biharis lack basic rights such as voting privileges and official citizenship; the vast majority are not eligible for national ID’s and passports thus making them stateless and unable to leave Bangladesh. This ambiguous status prevents Biharis from being able to obtain jobs or formal education thus contributing to cyclical poverty. To earn meager incomes the residents of Bihari camps vastly rely on small shops, embroidery and textile businesses. . Conditions of these camps are tough to say the leas. While Bangladesh focuses on improving nationwide infrastructure and Dhaka continues to grow quickly in population, the camps remain underserved communities that lack basic amenities such as sanitation and water. It is common for an average family of eight to share a small 8’ by 8’ room; communal restrooms and shower facilities ares shared among thousands of residents. In addition, due to the “temporary” status of these camps residents risk eviction at any point if the government reclaims the land on which they are established. . #dhaka #bangladesh #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #streetphotography #news #natgeo #reportage #nationalgeographic #dailylife #street #holyweek #everydayasia #discoverearth #reportage #createexplore #everydaysocialjustice #dotexif #everydayasia #everydayeverywhere #mytinyatlas #welltravelled #letsgosomewhere #globetrotter

Melbourne, Australia. 2011. At the St Kilda Drop-In, "Steven" has a chat. It didn't matter if anyone was listening, Steven would share his thoughts, sometimes running commentary on what was happening around him, sometimes recalling hallucinations as if they were real. Most of the time, though, he was lucid. #photojournalism  #photojournalist #photojournalists  #documentary #documentaryphotography #documentaryphotographer  #documentaryphoto #documentaryphotos  #documentaryphotograph #documentarywork  #reportage #reportagephotography  #photography #blackandwhite  #blancoynegro  #monotone #blackandwhitephotography  #stkilda #melbourne #australia #retrospective  #nikon  @nikon_australia
