Very few ‘coaches’ or ‘PTs’ actually develop a long-term programme for their clients. The majority will just blitz their clients with a mixture of ineffective HIIT, and light weights. But as a client, you should be seeking a long-term goal of progression. Why do you want to look the same every year? Girls, do you actually want to build solid glutes, as well as leaning down your waist? Progression. Is. Necessary. The purpose of periodisation is to ensure the individual achieves a minimum volume of exercise via progressive overload of intensity/volume over a prolonged timeframe. For example: If an obese person with no training experience wanted to drop a significant amount of weight, then it would be reckless of me to make them do ridiculous amounts of HIIT. If someone has never lifted a weight before, but wanted to build muscle, I wouldn’t make them overload on major compound lifts initially. There needs to preparation and build-up to these intensities.
