So, what do you do if you can’t grow your own vegetables? Find someone local who shares your passion for knowing where your food comes from, and buy from them! @tarrawallafarm is an easy and beautiful 12 minute drive in the country from home. I love that I can place an order and usually pick it up within a day. More expensive than supermarket food? You betcha! The benefit of a supermarket is convenience. The benefits of eating locally grown food is eating seasonally, supporting local farmers and the local economy, and you can ask the grower how the food was grown: do they use fertiliser, and where does it come from? How do they decide what to plant and where? What does sustainable produce mean? If you ask the supermarket produce manager these same questions, they probably won’t know.- because they don’t have to know. Because organic farms don’t use pesticides, fruits and vegetables boost their production of phytochemicals (antioxidants and vitamins) that not only strengthen their resistance to insects, but boost their nutritional value. I digress! Definitely more expensive than commercially grown produce. Organic farms are typically small, and they’re labour intensive. It takes organic food longer to grow, and fruits and vegetables may be smaller than their supermarket counterparts, because synthetic growth hormones aren’t used. In stressful times like finals week, there is nothing more liberating than a run, which is definitely not an option with this pain. Today, I told myself I wasn't going to waste another day dwelling on what I couldn't do. Homemade organic boba in coffee..... courtesy of my teenager. She discovered this a while back through a friend and when we looked into the ingredients of the ones sold in most tea shops and Thai restaurants.... are filled with food coloring and other carcinogenic ingredients. Sunday nights are for PIZZA! 🍕 love Trader Joe's cauliflower pizza crust and it literally only takes 20 min to make. Not only is a healthier pizza but it is also dairy free! 🧀We used Trader Joe's almond cheese and it was so good. Topped both pizza with almond cheese, tomatoes 🍅 , onions, mushrooms, and garlic. For one we used pesto sauce as the base and the other one with the classic tomato sauce. I could tell you which one I liked the best. They were both insanely good. Sippin’ on a big mug of Dark Chocolate Peppermint Hot Cocoa and breathin’ in the smell of our fresh Christmas tree. . Even though we will be traveling for the holidays, it just didn’t feel right not having a tree at home, so we picked up our little guy at Whole Foods yesterday. While we were there we couldn’t resist getting some hot cocoa mix, too ☺️. Fortunately, the hubs and I have very similar tastebuds and we both love peppermint and chocolate, so that made our choice an easy one. I really like the simple ingredients of this Cisse Cocoa Co. (uses regular ol’ sugar, dark cocoa powder & peppermint oil) and it is Fair Trade certified which I appreciate. I mixed a couple spoonfuls with warm @Fairlife milk for the extra protein, and it tastes so darn satisfying. . Winter smoothies call for grounding veggies. I added a few beet chunks to my smoothie this morning, kicking up the nutrient content and also upping the color game 💜💕 The fruit masks the taste of the veggies. Feel free to use a whole frozen banana for a creamier version. Here’s how you can DO IT 👇🏼 ↠1 cup @foragerproject cashew milk ↠handful of frozen strawberries ↠1/2 frozen banana ↠1/2 sliced and frozen zucchini ↠3 sliced chunks of raw or cooked beets ↠1 tablespoon of chia seeds ↠2 scoops @furtherfood collagen peptides Blend everything together in a high speed blender until smooth and creamy. So I did two big things this week that I’ve literally been putting off for years. . . . I had 4 babies in 5 years all of whom were EBFed for 12-18 months. So I kept putting off a cleanse, and even though I stopped nursing 1 year ago this month, I still hadn’t done it. I thought about it. But it just seemed like too much. One more thing I would have to worry about and add to my daily to-do list. But this past week, I just decided to do it. It was time to do something for ME. Now I wasn’t perfect this week, but I took all my supplements everyday this week, drank only water and #ningxiared (and Zyng of course), and ate mostly real food. Could I have done better? Yes. But I proved to myself that I COULD do it. That I DO still have some will power, and that I CAN eat healthy. In fact, after this week using Young Living’s #cleansingtrio, I feel better than I have in a long time! . . . The second big thing—my hubs has been working on his doctorate for 11 years. 😬 He finished his course work about 8 years ago and has been ABD since then. He’s tried to get started on his dissertation so many times, but things kept happening—my dad’s death, 4 babies in 5 years—we’ve really just been in constant survival mode since 2010. Just trying to keep our heads above water. So I didn’t push him to make time to do his dissertation. Because I knew it would require him to be away from home more, because I knew I would have to be his editor, because I just didn’t think we could handle one more thing. But this week, we just decided to go for it. He had one more chance to get something submitted. He spent the last week reading and writing, and I spent the last few days editing like crazy and making sure all the formatting was correct. And you know what? We did it! He got it done, and his professors couldn’t be more pleased. So after 8 years, he is finally moving forward and getting one step closer to finishing. . . . And it feels so good—I haven’t felt this accomplished in a long time. I can do hard things. I just have to get past the “it’s too hard” mindset, and get it done. #nextupgold
